The opening of the spring farmer’s market season is always a joyful occasion where I live in Central Virginia because the entire world seems to be bursting into bloom after a long winter absence. When my kids and I visited one of our local farmer’s markets in late March, we were transfixed by the glorious displays of tulips in the booths of some local flower farms. More stunning by far than the sedate blooms I’d so often seen in grocery stores, these florals were exquisite. The complexity of color, texture, and form represented by the tulips that we saw was breathtaking!

This experience sparked an interest in tulips that inspired me to explore them further in this collection. Tulips can sometimes seem ubiquitous to the point of being overlooked, but they can also be unusual, exotic, and exciting as well as timeless. Accordingly, each painting in this collection shows a unique dimension of this flower, which traditionally represents new beginnings and perfect, unconditional love.

My own appreciation for tulips has only deepened since that early spring day in the farmer’s market, and my hope is that these paintings will brighten your space by reflecting the joy and sense of renewal that this remarkable flower inherently brings.
