About Megan Spillars:

Subject matter is always secondary to emotion and light when I’m creating but I’m drawn to landscapes, florals, and figurative work. My work centers on the fleeting moments we experience in life and the light that carries us, even in the darkest times.

My paintings have been described as “calming and peaceful, with an element of wonder”. To me though, they are like a personal journal…capturing the hope, joy, and beauty I see around me. I’m also extremely interested and passionate about the intersection of creativity and mental health and how harnessing creative pursuits invites peace and pleasure in to our lives.

I feel most like myself with a paintbrush in hand. While I’m mostly self taught, my beloved aunt was a fine artist so I grew up studying her brush strokes and beautiful textile designs. I also studied under several professional artists and am appreciative of the many mentors that have encouraged me to start sharing my work. In the words of Edgar Payne though, “The study of art is a lifetime matter” for me. I never will get tired of learning, finding the perfect composition, or laying on blocks of color. I primarly paint in oils and release my work three times a year in collections but also enjoy mixed media and textile design.

I live in Raleigh, North Carolina with my husband and three children. Life is busy but I try to paint as much as possible from my home studio when I can squeeze it in.
