Pa'u rider at a Kamehameha flower parade on Maui. The first horse arrived in Hawai'i 1803, quickly becoming skilled equestrians. Women protected their clothes from dust with long fabrics, called pa'u, draped over their clothes down to the stirrups. Thereby the name Pa'u rider.
